Built for Australian conditions
It’s no secret that Australia’s climate doesn't go easy on buildings or the products that hold them together. Building materials are exposed to high UV and coastal corrosion wearing away inferior solutions before a project is even a decade old. Extreme temperature swings put constant stress on structures that need to perform for generations to come.
After 50 years of working across every state and territory, we understand these conditions thoroughly. Every Sika solution is developed and tested with the realities of the Australian environment and its seasonal changes in mind.
Proven on Australia's most demanding environment
When the Saffire Freycinet Resort in Tasmania needed a long-term waterproof solution, the brief was as demanding as the climate; with around 600mm of rain a year and over 300 days of sunshine, the architects and owners needed a system that could handle the extremes while still integrating into the resort's design. At The Glen Shopping Centre in Victoria, structural works had to be delivered in a fully live retail environment; doors open, shoppers in and some non-negotiable deadlines. And at Microsoft Sydney, precision and reliability weren't just expectations, they were the foundations of the job.
Each project came with its own unique brief and set of challenges, yet they all shared the same outcome: structures built to last, no exceptions.
Extending what's already there
We know all too well that replacing ageing infrastructure is expensive, disruptive, and unsustainable. It’s for this reason that on the Chatswood, New South Wales carpark project, our team focused on restoring and upgrading the existing structure, extending its service life well beyond its original design without the need for demolition or a rebuild.
Sustainable refurbishment isn't a new idea for Sika. It's an approach we've championed for decades and continue to innovatively advance as the industry seeks to reduce waste and embodied carbon. Today, extending the life of existing structures is becoming a defining measure of sustainable construction, rather than building from scratch.
The project that changed how we think about buildings
If there's one project that captures what's possible when performance and sustainability align, it's Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney, widely recognised as the world’s first building recycling project.
Rather than demolishing a 1970s office tower, the project team retained around 95% of the existing structure and built around it, creating a building designed to stand for another 100 years.
The Sika team were central to making that happen, providing the reinforcement solutions that made it structurally possible to retain, strengthen, and build upward. We turned what could have been a demolition job into a global benchmark for sustainable construction.
Around 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ were saved, resulting in significant cost and program savings. The project is now held up globally as proof that reusing and refurbishing existing structures can outperform a complete rebuild.
