IMPORTANT
Carry out equipment trials
Carry out equipment trials to make sure the Product can be mixed satisfactorily before full project application.
The following conditions regarding substrate quality must be fulfilled or appropriate measures must be taken.
-
Cementitious substrates must be sufficiently cured and dried (between 2 to 6 weeks).
-
All substrates must possess structural stability to bear the weight of the new tiling while providing a secure and firm base.
-
Surfaces must be dry and clean, free of loose or friable particles and contaminants such as dust, dirt, oil, wax polish, grease, cement laitance, or efflorescence.
-
Prepare substrates mechanically using techniques such as sanding and scraping to remove all traces of any materials that could reduce the product’s adhesion to the substrate. Remove all dust, loose and friable material from the application surface with industrial vacuuming equipment.
-
Smooth surfaces must be roughened lightly to improve adhesion.
-
When laying tiles on non-absorbent or substrates with limited absorbency, such as existing tiles or painted surfaces, ensure these surfaces are stable, firmly bonded, and securely in place. Afterwards, use suitable degreasing or descaling products to clean the surface thoroughly and completely.
-
For tiling in constantly damp or wet rooms, a suitable Sika® waterproofing product or system must be applied to the substrate before tiling.
GROUTING
-
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease.
-
Ensure the joint does not contain excess tile adhesive.
MIXING
SikaCeram®-880 Easy Epoxy is a reactive product. It sets from a chemical reaction between the two parts, A and B. These parts must be thoroughly mixed at the correct mixing ratio. Mix full units only.
- Mix part A (the resin component) briefly using an electric single paddle mixer with a spiral paddle.
- Add part B (hardener) to part A and mix both parts continuously for 3 minutes until the mixture achieves a uniform colour.
- Transfer mixed material to a clean bucket and mix again thoroughly.
APPLICATION
IMPORTANT
Risk of cracking due to application in direct sun or strong winds
- Do not apply the Product in hot direct sun, strong winds or both.
IMPORTANT
Absorbency of natural stone
Staining from plasticiser migration may occur when used on natural stone.
- Conduct a test prior to application
TILE GROUTING
SikaCeram®-880 Easy Epoxy is applied using an appropriate rubber float.
Preconditions
Observe the tile adhesive curing time before starting to grout.
- Completely fill the joints and compact them uniformly.
- Using the same float, remove excess grout from the tile surfaces, moving the tool diagonally across the joints.
TILE CLEANING
IMPORTANT
Leaving the surface too long before cleaning
Epoxy haze caused during application will be difficult to safely remove if the SikaCeram®-880 Easy Epoxy is left too long before cleaning.
- At +20 °C the initial, emulsifying clean can be given 10–45 minutes after finishing the grouting.
- At +20 °C, the surface can be given a second clean, using more water, up to 60 minutes after mixing the Product.
- Higher ambient temperatures will reduce this period and lower ambient temperatures will extend it.
Preconditions
The grout has set sufficiently to avoid it being removed from the joint during cleaning.
- For an initial, emulsifying clean, use a small amount of clean water and a sponge float.
- Rub the tiles in a circular motion to remove excess material. Rinse the sponge frequently.
- For the second clean, wash the surface with a sponge float in diagonal movements. Add SikaCeram-960 Epoxy Finish to the wash water, diluted 1 : 100.
- IMPORTANT Rinse the sponge and change the wash water frequently. Remove any smears or remaining haze.
- On the same day, check if the surface is clean as soon as it has dried. Repeat the cleaning process if necessary.
- When the grout has cured the next day, use SikaCeram®-960 Epoxy Finish diluted 1 : 100 in clean water to remove any remaining haze.
CLEANING OF EQUIPMENT
Clean all tools and application equipment with water immediately after use. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.
