Project Background

Due to a growing population and an increase in high-density living, the volume of vehicle traffic has risen. As a result, travel delays during peak periods have become more frequent in the Town of Victoria Park and the City of Canning. The Department of Planning, Land, and Heritage has been tasked with developing a long-term solution to reduce congestion and travel times around six level crossings on the Armadale Rail Line, which runs from Perth to Armadale.

Project Information

The scope proposed by the Department of Planning, Land, and Heritage was to elevate the rail structure to eliminate congestion associated with six level crossings. In addition to reducing congestion and lengthy travel delays, elevating the structure will free up six hectares of land previously occupied by rail lines, transforming it into flexible community spaces. New, modern elevated stations will be built to replace five stations that were previously at track/street level. The two elevated viaducts will span four kilometers, creating eight kilometers of track on slab railway lines.

Project Requirements

The 8 km of new rail line required grouting 22,950 base plates for the track-on-slab system with high-strength, pourable epoxy grout.

Sika Solution

Sika supplied a solvent-free, high-flow epoxy resin grout for track slab baseplate grouting. Additionally, Sika provided a high-performance cementitious grout for grouting abutments and sound walls throughout the project.
