When it comes to tiling, grout often plays second fiddle to the tiles themselves. But as any experienced tiler will tell you, tile grout is far more than just a filler. It serves as the finishing touch that locks your tiles in place, protects them against water ingress, movement and moisture, and enhances the overall appearance and longevity of your project.
Whether you’re a homeowner tackling your first bathroom tile grout update or a professional tiler finishing a commercial floor, choosing the right grout makes all the difference. Here we break down what to look for in tile grout and the best applications for each.
Types of tile grout and application
There are two main types of grouts – cement-based and epoxy based. Cement-based grout comes in sanded and non-sanded varieties, and in powdered or pre-mixed form. Epoxy grout is usually a 3 part system made from a mix of epoxy resin, epoxy hardener and powdered grout, but can also come as 2 part system like SikaCeram®-880 Easy Epoxy when the epoxy hardener has the colour pigment in it.
Cement-based grout
Best for: tiling large areas inside and outside the home.
Can be a cost-effective option, offering a larger range of colour choices and can be sealed protect against wear.
Cement-based tile grout is the most common type used in residential or large commercial projects. Cement-based grouts are a cost-effective option that offers a large range of colours, compatible with most common tile types for internal, external wall and floor applications. For tiling projects that require high performance and low maintenance, SikaCeram®-690 Elite has exceptional colour consistency which is imperative for grouting large areas, doesn’t require sealing and already has built in additives to repel water, dirt and stains making it easier to maintain.

Epoxy grout
Best for: High-traffic, high-moisture, or hygienic areas.
Because epoxy grout is made from a mix of epoxy resins and a hardener it’s ideal for demanding environments such commercial kitchens, bathrooms, pools, and areas exposed to harsh cleaning resumes, high foot traffic and area such as spas or saunas with high moisture.
While epoxy grout has a few more mixing and application steps than cement-based grout, its long-term performance and durability pays off. It resists stains, won’t crack under pressure, and doesn’t require sealing.
Pro tip: Because epoxy grout sets quickly, mix only what you can use within the working time and clean as you go to avoid surface haze.
