Project Background

Gunyama Park and Aquatic Centre is the largest pool complex built in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics. It features a 50m heated outdoor pool set within a larger, irregular shaped 'beach pool', 25m heated indoor program pool, Indoor leisure pool & a Heated hydrotherapy pool. The complex forms a key element of the overall redevelopment plan for Green Square.

Project Requirements

The 25m indoor heated pool ran into problems when it was discovered that the pool was 100mm too wide which created issues with the hydraulic lifts which raise and lower the level of the pool. Whilst it was simple enough to remove the overlaying tiles, screed & concrete etc it left no cover for the reinforcing steel exposing it to potential corrosion.

Sika Solution

The Sika Solution was to provide an initial layer of Sikadur 31/41 to infill the deeper voids, cover the exposed steel with Sika Epocem 110 and then provide a final layer of Sikadur 33. The Sikadur 33 was then broadcast with sand to provide a mechanical key for the overlaying waterproofing membrane. The solution was reviewed by the City of Sydney consultant and CPB Engineer who were very impressed with the final outcome and appreciative of the Sika teams effort to quickly resolve their problem.
